How to Clean and Repair a Leaking Faucet

Fixing a leaking faucet by cleaning it and replacing worn-out parts like O-rings is a straightforward process. Here’s how you can do it:

Tools & Materials Needed:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips and flathead screwdrivers
  • Replacement O-rings and washers (match size with old ones)
  • White vinegar (for cleaning)
  • Plumber’s grease
  • Bucket or towel (to catch water)

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Turn Off the Water Supply

  • Look under the sink for shut-off valves and turn them clockwise to stop the water.
  • If no shut-off valve exists, turn off the main water supply.
  • Open the faucet to drain any remaining water.

2. Remove the Faucet Handle

  • Use a screwdriver to remove the screw holding the handle (it may be under a decorative cap).
  • Lift off the handle carefully.

3. Disassemble the Faucet

  • Depending on the faucet type (compression, ball, cartridge, or ceramic disk), you may need to remove a retaining nut or screw.
  • Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove these parts.

4. Inspect and Remove the O-Rings & Washers

  • Look for worn-out or damaged O-rings and washers in the faucet assembly.
  • Use a small flathead screwdriver or needle-nose pliers to remove them.

5. Clean the Faucet Components

  • Soak all parts in white vinegar to remove mineral buildup.
  • Scrub with an old toothbrush for stubborn deposits.
  • Rinse with water and dry thoroughly.

6. Replace the O-Rings and Washers

  • Coat the new O-rings and washers with plumber’s grease for a better seal.
  • Install them in place of the old ones.

7. Reassemble the Faucet

  • Reinstall the faucet components in reverse order.
  • Tighten screws and nuts carefully to avoid over-tightening.

8. Turn the Water Supply Back On

  • Slowly turn on the water and check for leaks.
  • If leaks persist, ensure all parts are seated properly and tightened.

This should stop the leak and restore proper function to your faucet!
